Meet the Farmer

Farmer Mickey has been interested in food and agriculture systems from a very young age. After watching Food Inc. in his high school culinary arts class he was hooked. Ater graduating from Illinois State University with a degree in Agriculture buisness he found himself working at one of the largest agricultural companies in the world.  After several years he made the decision to try out his original passion withing agriculture.  That was small-scale, high intensive vegetable farming.

In 2022 he took the leap and started volunteering at Urbavore Farm, a 13 acre permaculture oasis in the heart of Kansas City. There he worked with laying hens and hogs alongside an extensive variety of vegetables and flower. The following growing season, he traveled to Manson, Washington where he work at Wildnow Farm learning more about permaculture, wildcrafting and the power of plants as medicine. There he worked with a variety of botanical herbs to make soaps, salves, and other products.

While working on other farms he also became infatuated with youtubers focused on Korean Natural farming and the idea of the soil food web. This style of farming was based on the biology in the soil rather than what has come out of the green revolution and chemical based farming methods. Taking a soil science classes and even purchasing a microscope to evaluate his soils he became familiar with these different methods.

Once arriving back in the KC metro he managed locate a spot to begin growing and in the spring of 2024 started Farmyard KC. A small plot Regenerative focused market garden growing lettuce greens, root crops, herbs, garlic and elderberries. With the support of his wife Claire, crowd favorite Tex and the rest of his community Farmyard KC looks to become a trusted produce brand in the KC metro area for years to come.
